What Do I Really Eat?

Perhaps this month you have been inspired to make breakfast a thing of beauty. Perhaps you are exhausted by my regaling you about the wonders of grilled bread, fluffy waffles, or oatmeal, a new way. Perhaps you are asking yourself: All of these recipes are nice and all, but does Adrienne really eat like this every day? And the answer, my friends is...of course not.

I, like many people, get fixated on foods. And it seems that the one area where this is most apparent is breakfast. For the quick, grab-it-and-go, sort of breakfast I have my standards: a sourdough English muffin with butter and just a smattering of raspberry jam; thinly sliced, German brown bread with hazelnuts and five grains, that stays with you well past lunch time; a bowl of Rice Krispies with cold milk splashed in and sliced strawberries. These are nothing too special, but they are foods that I have come to rely on and look forward to each night as I shut off my light and curl into the fetal position.

And the latest fixation is a little something that I like to call the Reese's toast. As you may remember I have no compunction about snacking on a little something sweet first thing in the morning. And sweet this toast is. White sandwich bread is what I have found to be the ideal toasting medium. Bland, fine-grained, and it has the ability to get perfectly toasted-- crisp, and light brown outside, with a soft, chewy texture inside. Then I glide on a bit of smooth peanut butter, careful to leave not a morsel of bread naked. Finally a bit of Nutella, that glorious chocolate-hazelnut spread gets gooped on top of the peanut butter.

Decadent and indulgent? Yes. But my breakfast most days in September too. With a steaming cup of coffee, not too sweet (I do have my principles), and a piece of sliced fruit, that's what I have been eating. So...at the end of this month of breakfasts, I ask you, what have you been eating this month?

I've been eating a lot of yogurt for breakfast... and our work stocks cereal, but most of it is of the gross, sugary variety (fruit loops, yuck!) - but the raisin bran is sort of okay and i like raisins. with organic whole milk, i feel somewhat good eating it. :) oh and a cup of coffee with milk and a tiny bit of sugar. your toast makes me crave nutella all over again!!

but now lemme tell you what i love love love. a whole wheat english muffin with a gently fried egg sprinkled with a great fleu de sel and white truffle oil...

Scarily enough, the exact same toast/PB/Nutella combo. That, along with a cinnamon-cardamom-brewed espresso, has fueled many of my mornings recently. I've also been eating a lot of salmon lately courtesy of my butcher, so scrambled eggs with bits of leftover salmon, dill, and rosemary have complemented my normal fare. When I've got time and am feeling in the mood for something nicer, eggs hussard with marchand de vin sauce has really hit the spot.

I told my husband, who is British, about your toast idea (I think it sounds amazing and will be trying tomorrow morning). He thought it was the worst idea ever...then again, he hates any peanut butter/chocolate combo, just like most Brits. Oh, well...I keep trying!

My typical breakfast is two pieces of Nature's Own Double Fiber bread, toasted, and topped with a thin layer of smooth peanut butter with a banana or a tart green apple on the side. Occasionally I top my dry toast with cheddar cheese, or have cinnamon oatmeal instead of the toast. I try to fill myself with fiber and a bit of protein. And some coffee with two sugars and a bit of 1% milk, but I usually finish that off before breakfast and have my first water of the day while I eat.

I'm a bit jealous of everyone else's breakfasts, as I've been having a liquid breakfast, pre-gym, at dawn. Soy yogurt smoothie with frozen raspberries, oj, extra fiber, linseed oil, and spirulina...anyone?

I've been on a yogurt with granola and flaxseed meal kick, sometimes with a few raspberries thrown in. I feel good about the fiber, calcium and fruit in the morning, and I love all the different textures.
